Christianity has dominated all modern history. Its morality, based on the loving kindness of an Eternal Father and the mystic brotherhood with the God-man, has renovated the fact of the earth. It has set firmly the cornerstone for all future civilisation, the conviction of a common humanity that has been deeply rooted in us by no stoicism, but by the story of Jesus Christ and by the lives and deaths of countless Christian men and women. It has clarified at once the sense of sin and the reasons for hope. It has touched the deepest springs of efficient conviction; preached successfully, in season and out of season, of mercy and justice and peace; affected intimately every function of domestic life; thrown a sheltering veil of sanctity about maid and mother and home. It has distinctly raised the social and civil life of all civilized humankind. It bears within itself the antidote of a certain divine presence, whereby it overcomes forever those germs of decay and change that cause the death of all other societies. Its earnest writers and exponents had a subtle sense of its true character, when they took over from paganism and applied to the work of Jesus the symbolic myth of the phoenix, emblem of a native, organic and indestructible vitality.

REAL REPENTANCE.
Repentance is not merely a little tinge of remorse over some wrongdoing. It is not simply a gush of tears at the recollection of some wickedness. It is not mere shame at being found out in some meanness or uncleanness or dishonesty. It is the revolution of the whole life. Sins wept over must be forsaken forever. Repentance is a change of heart, a turning of the face just the other way. It is well for us to make diligent quest to be sure that we always abandon the wrongdoing: which we deplore, that we quit the evil course which we regret, that we turn away from the sin which we confess. A good many people get only half the gospel. They talk a great deal about believing, but very little about repenting. It needs to be remembered that a faith which does not lead to a genuine repentance is not a faith which saves.
"What is the matter, Hercules!" Jove asked as the former paused in his arduous work of cleaning the Augean stables.
"I was merely longing for the horseless age," replied Hercules.
"You're a big boy now, but your father still whips you, does he? That shows the force of habit," said the boy's uncle.
"No!" blurted the boy; "it shows the habit of force."
