The Statue of Liberty—the most famous monument in the world—rises 151 feet high as a statue on its base which is 152 feet high. Its torch is uplifted and held in the Statue's right hand, while her left hand holds a tablet symbolizing the Declaration of Independence. This inspiring masterpiece was the work of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and was a gift of the people of France to the people of the United States. It was dedicated on October 28, 1886 and stands in a star-shaped Fort Wood on Liberty Island.
The American Museum of Immigration is located in the base of the statue. The Museum tells the unique story of our country: The making of the United States by millions of men and women who came from other lands. The Museum has scenes from the Immigration past, actual objects which accompanied their owners to the New World, visual accounts of immigrants who earned public acclaim, and above all it does honor to the anonymous millions who braved the unknown to make us what we are.
